Cal States – Saturday

Cal States (Palo Alto edition) played out under sporadic rain and late sunshine. The format: round robin with all seven teams plus a finals round. Last chance for the tryouts to make their marks before the 2011 roster is complete!

Game 1 – Round robin – 11:00a vs Streetgang (San Diego, CA)
A tough initial match-up on the slate after a first-round bye. The game seemed to take a long time, but we managed to win 15-9. They’ll be even tougher next time we face them.

Game 2 – Round robin – 1:00p vs Journeymen (Bay Area, CA)
After a strong start from the improved J-Men, we fell behind 4-5 before reeling off an even stronger finish to win 15-5.

Game 3 – Round robin – 3:00p vs Wolf (Bay Area, CA)
Wolf is still a young, athletic team with plenty of talent but we got the better of them this time with a 15-6 victory.

Busy weekend

This weekend marks the opening of tryouts with the men’s mixer at Roble Field on Stanford campus, from 10:00a-1:30p on Saturday. Revolver will be joined by other Bay Area teams Wolf, the Journeymen, and Flying Circus in hosting the event. The attendees that stand out will be invited to join Revolver at future closed tryout sessions if they desire.

Also, best of luck to current and ex-Revolver members at Southwest Regionals in nearby Morgan Hill this weekend, as well as the alma maters of many other teammates (Stanford, UC Davis, and UC Santa Barbara):
UC Santa Cruz Slugs: coach Daryl Nounnan (’06-’09), players Cassidy Rasmussen (’09-pres) and Russell Wynne (’10-pres)
Cal-Berkeley: coach Alex “Dutchy” Ghesquiere (’08-pres), player Sam Kanner (’10-pres)

Recap: youth clinic a success

The future stars of Revolver and Fury emerged for a sunny Sunday of Ultimate in the foothills of Pleasanton on April 17. The first thing the kids learned may have been one of the most important lessons of the day: how to get fired up! With the classic Revolver refrain to remind everyone what it takes to reach the top, captain Robbie Cahill lead a slow building roar into the call and response: “What is it?” — “Not enough!”

The youth split into groups by age and learned ability and rotated between four stations: marking, throwing, offensive tactics, and defensive tactics. A midday scrimmage preceded lunch and later in the afternoon the hosts played a fast-paced exhibition that featured Mike Payne’s sarcastic PA announcing and Mac Taylor tripping over a hurdle and falling into a lacrosse goal after toeing in a score at the back of the endzone. The kids may have been more interested in the raffle for Revolver, Jam, and Fury jerseys, hats, and shorts up until that point of the exhibition…

(Cree Howard of Fury and Robbie Cahill of Revolver instruct middle school students at the defensive tactics station.)

Thanks to Allen Thoe and Jordan Rose for logistics, Jon Levy and Mike Payne from Revolver, and Lakshmi Narayan and Alicia White from Fury for preparing the agenda. We look forward to our next opportunity to work with the Bay Area youth!

THIS WEEKEND – Revolver/Fury host youth camp!

It’s spring and the weather is finally realizing we live in California. All the more reason to to grab every youth player you know (or grab your friends if you ARE a youth player), and come out to the youth clinic being held THIS WEEKEND at Foothill High School in Pleasanton starting at 10:30am (running about 4 hours).

National/World champions Revolver and Fury will be acting as instructors, and we’ll mix up teaching, drills, and playing for a fun time. We’ll also be handing out some Ultimate paraphernalia and looking for up-and-coming stars!

Hope to see MANY excited players out there!
